Kohnkes Own CELL SALTSĀ®

Electrolyte Supplement of Concentrated Physiological Salts for Horses

Many owners do not realise that horses require higher levels of salt, especially when moderately sweating during daily work. Adding an electrolyte mix to the ration will encourage your horse to drink as well as replace the important minerals lost through sweat.

Cell-Salts provides essential physiological salts and other electrolytes which help correct a low or inadequate natural content in common equine diets.

Cell-Salts is a concentrated all-in-one formulation which provides all the salts your horse needs. Highly palatable and easy to mix into feeds, Cell-Salts is now a concentrated salt mix suited to horses in New Zealand

Cell-Salts helps to replenish shortfalls of dietary salts in all resting, working and travelling horses under normal conditions or moderate weather.  Cell-Salts is designed with a flexible supplementation rate relative to specific daily requirements, including feed supplied, water intake and sweat loss.

Which Horses Benefit

  • All horses resting or working in normal conditions and weather regions in New Zealand

  • Horses which sweat normally in response to exercise, especially during short to medium training periods under 1 hour per day.

  • Flexible dose rates ensure electrolyte replacement for horses at rest and at all levels of training, from light work to intense work

  • For electrolyte replacement in horses during Spring and Summer (ie warm weather but low to medium humidity).

Major Ingredients

  • Cell-Salts contains essential salts, including sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride, as a concentrated, feed-based electrolyte supplement.

  • Cell-Salts contains glucose to assist sweat replenishment in normal or variable weather conditions.

  • Cell-Salts is specially coated to ensure optimum palatability and reduced salt reactivity, preserving fragile vitamins in the feed and eliminating the risk of digestive upset commonly caused by paste or liquid salt solutions

  • Cell-Salts is vanilla flavoured and a heavy, low dust powder for optimum palatability and reduced wastage.

Supplementation Guidelines for New Zealand

Each level scoopful provides 25 g of Cell-Salts. Mix the measured amount into the daily feed.  It is recommended to provide Cell-Salts after extended exercise to encourage rehydration.  Always ensure that adequate clean & fresh drinking water is available at all times.

For horses at rest, feed 25 g daily.

For horses in light work (up to 30-60 minutes walking, trotting, light cantering), feed 37.5 grams daily.

For horses in moderate work (30-120 minutes walking, trotting, cantering and some galloping) feed 50 grams daily, recommended to split between morning and night feeds.

For heavily or intensely worked horses (15-30 minutes fast trotting, cantering, galloping, jumping, horses in full race training), feed up to 75 grams daily, split between morning and evening feeds.

For ponies and miniatures, feed half the above amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Cell-Saltsā„¢ be given in water or as a drench?

The small amount of refined vegetable oil, which is used to coat the potassium to prolong its uptake and mask the normally bitter taste means Cell-Saltsā„¢ does not readily dissolve in water to be offered as a drink. It can be used as a saline drench when given in large volumes of water (4 litres). You must consult your vet for advice on administering salines.

Cell-Saltsā„¢ does not contain bicarbonate. Why?

Bicarbonate is a salt present in the blood and muscle cells to help provide natural alkaline reserve, along with phosphates in buffering against lactic acid produced by rapidly contracting muscle cells during fast, anaerobic excercise.
Horses have a large alkaline reserve and adding extra bicarbonate in a salt mix in a small 30-60g dose, has no direct benefit because the total amount of bicarbonate added is a relatively miniscule amount. Excess bicarbonate can be absorbed into the blood and result in a horse becoming ā€˜thick in the windā€™ during and after exercise. Excess bicarbonate can also trigger an increase in the excretion of potassium in the urine, which can result in low blood levels of this important salt. Levels of bicarbonate can also be tested in pre-race blood samples if excess is given to race horses.
Citrate muscle buffers are also available to help neutralise lactic acid in the muscle tissue, but excess use can also increase the excretion of potassium salt and result in reduced nervous function and dehydration.

Why is it important to feed a salt mix?

During exercise, 80% of the energy metabolised during muscle activity is given off as heat. This is dissipated largely by evaporation of sweat secreted from the skin surface to cool the body during exercise. Sweat loss of 4-5L/hour can be expected during moderate exercise under cool conditions, increasing by 30-35% under warm conditions and doubling to 10-11L/per hour under hot conditions. Horses experiencing sweat loss should be supplemented with sources of potassium, magnesium and calcium when worked on a regular basis. Cell-Saltsā„¢ provides a concentrated supplement of potassium and magnesium, with sodium, which helps correct the low sodium and chloride levels in common feeds.

Why is glucose added to Cell-Saltsā„¢?

Glucose provides an energy source for the efficient uptake of sodium in salt. When the horse drinks water, it assists rehydration of the blood and tissues after exercise. The glucose also helps to make Cell-Saltsā„¢ more palatable. Some high salt products are sifted out by ā€˜fussyā€™ eaters. Cell-Saltsā„¢ contains microfined ingredients to help avoid settling and sifting out. Many salt mixes contain cheap coarse salts which are easily sifted out. The potassium found in Cell Saltsā„¢ is also coated with high quality vegetable oil, which is resistant to oxidation. This coating reduces the bitterness associated with high potassium salt mixes. This helps ensure that Cell-Saltsā„¢ is well accepted in the feed.
